"Did you make it clear that the United States expects Mexico to pay for the border wall President Trump has proposed?" George Stephanopoulos asked Tillerson on ABC's "This Week."
"We had no conversation about that issue," Tillerson replied, referring to his meeting last week with Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray.
"That's surprising to me, no discussion of paying for the border wall, since President Trump spoke about it so often during the campaign," Stephanopoulos pressed. "Is it the policy of the United States that Mexico must pay for that wall?"
"It's just not part of our discussions between the foreign minister and myself," Tillerson said.
Bids for prototypes of Trump's proposed wall were due on Tuesday to the Department of Homeland Security.
Trump promised Mexico would pay for a border wall.
