From The Reporter’s Notebook

Trevor Noah’s first week in the anchor chair of the the Daily Show was business as usual, says TPM’s Caitlin Cruz. Nothing was too surprising about his first episode, which may be because many of the same award-winning writers stayed put. Though his first presidential candidate interview with Chris Christie was a good mix of jokes and candor, it was no Colbert and Biden. But Noah found his groove on Thursday comparing Donald Trump to recent egomaniacal African leaders.

Agree or Disagree?

According to Josh Marshall, refusing to report the name of the Roseburg, Oregon shooter is a “grand evasion.” “The naming game is becoming a sign you’re not just being passive or indifferent,” Marshall writes. “You’re taking a stand. It’s becoming an emblem of your seriousness about the issue. But of course this is all bullshit. The issue is that virtually anyone can buy any or as many guns as they want and we as a society are not willing to do anything about it.”

Say What?!

“I’m doing great in the polls. If I were doing poorly, if I saw myself going down, if you would stop calling me because you no longer had any interest in Trump because he was doing so poorly, I’d go back to my business. I have no problem with that.”

– Trump said on NBC’s “Meet The Press” that he’s not a masochist.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “I can understand your desire for Bernie to win, but I don’t know of any alternate Universe where he comes close. All things being equal, I would vote for Bernie, but all things are NOT equal. In 1972, I was an idealistic McGovern voter, and learned my lesson then. So, you can see from the dates involved that I am rapidly approaching geezerhood, if not there already. My political goal is to help prevent a Republican fascist takeover of government. Their best shot is next year; after that, demographics make it really hard for them. Four years is all they need. So, we just can’t afford to take a chance on Bernie this year.”
