James Comey was easily confirmed as the new director of the FBI earlier this week, but Republican lawmakers aren’t wasting any time holding his feet to the fire.
In a letter sent to Comey and reported on Wednesday by CNN, eight Congressional Republicans demanded a more aggressive investigation into last year’s deadly attack in Benghazi, Libya.
“Rumors continue to swirl about the whereabouts of suspects involved in the attack,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter. “The FBI continues to add pictures of potential assailants to its website and asks the Libyan people to assist with identifying the alleged perpetrators. We struggle to understand why we don’t know more about those who attacked two U.S. compounds and murdered four brave Americans.”
The Republicans to sign off on the late included Sens. John McCain (R-AZ), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Ron Johnson (R-WI). Members of the House to sign the letter were Reps. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), Darrell Issa (R-CA), Trey Gowdy (R-SC) and Jim Jordan (R-OH).
Graham and Chaffetz initiated the letter, according to CNN. The Senate confirmed Comey on Monday by a lobsided 93-1 vote.
