Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC) won the commendation of a Republican colleague on Wednesday night for supporting an amendment to defund the Appalachian Regional Commission, The Huffington Post reported.
Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Ohio) took to the floor of the House of Representatives to argue in favor of the amendment, but the Ohio Republican made a point to thank Sanford.
“I want to thank the gentleman from South Carolina, Mr. Sanford, for his leadership in co-sponsoring this particular amendment with me,” Chabot said.
Of course, Sanford, who was elected to the House in a special election earlier this year, will likely forever be tied to Appalachia. In 2009, when Sanford disppeared from South Carolina to visit his then-mistress in Argentina, a spokesman claimed the governor was hiking the Appalachian Trail. Sanford ultimately resigned as governor amid the ensuing controversy.
