With the Supreme Court scheduled to hand down a decision on SB 1070, Arizona’s anti-immigration law, as early as Monday, Latino voters believe the ruling could have negative consequences for Latinos. A new poll conducted by Latino Decisions in five battleground states shows a majority of Latinos voters believe that if the court upholds the law, it will create an anti-immigrant, anti-Hispanic environment in the country. Only 28 percent believe upholding the law will have no effect on sentiment.
The poll also found that Latino voters’ have a strong connection to undocumented immigrants, with 55 percent of Latino registered voters saying that they knew someone who was undocumented; 11 percent said a member of their family is undocumented. There was good news for Democrats with a sizable increase in Latino voters believing that the Democratic Party is doing a good job of reaching out to Latinos, 50 percent up from 39 percent in January. Only 15 percent of respondents said the Republican Party was doing a good job reaching out to the community.
The poll is based on 2,000 interview of Latino registered voters, 400 each from the swing states of Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Nevada and Virginia. The overall margin of error is +/- 2.2 percent and +/- 4.9 percent in each state.
