Apple has finally admitted that the map that comes with its new version of iPhoto software for the iPhone and iPad is the work of OpenStreetMap, a free crowdsourced mapping program based in the UK. OpenStreetMap provides its data free to use for all, providing that it is properly credited, which Apple had not done previously.
But Apple now credits OpenStreetMap in its “Acknowledgements” section of iPhoto, according to a picture tweeted by the official OpenStreetMap account on Thursday.
The admission and belated accreditation comes nearly two months after Apple first unveiled the new version of iPhoto alongside its new iPad and bloggers quickly recognized OpenStreetMap as the maker of the map included, which allows users to geotag their photos.
