Melania Trump, Donald Trump’s wife, said in an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday morning that she doesn’t think her husband’s proposed immigration policies have gone too far, explaining that she “never thought to stay” in America without proper documentation after immigrating from Slovenia.
“I follow the law. I follow a law the way it’s supposed to be. I never thought to stay here without papers,” Trump told “Morning Joe” host Mika Brzezinski in an interview taped on Tuesday.
The former model she had a visa and returned to Slovenia to “stamp” it every few months before applying for a green card and, eventually, citizenship.
“So I went by the system. I went by the law and you should do that,” she said. “You should not just say, okay, let me just stay here and whatever happens happens.”
When asked about her husband’s proposed ban on Muslims entering the country—which Brzezinski said “can’t happen”—Trump said it was necessary.
“We need to screen who’s coming to the country. He wants to protect America,” she said. “He wants to protect people of America so we have a country and keep the country safe. That’s very important to him.”
The interview, while brief, also touched on how Trump advises her husband’s campaign (a few times a day) and her thoughts on the insults hurled at Trump (“normal”).
“We have thick skin and we know that people will judge him and people will call names, and they don’t give him enough credit,” she said. “From June that he announced, they don’t give him enough credit.”

When Mika asked her if she knew what “2+2 equals,” she said, “Hold on, I’ll get this.”
