Mohamad Anas Haitham Soueid, 48, was sentenced on Friday to 18 months in prison for spying on Syrian protestors on behalf of Syrian intelligence agents.
“Mr. Soueid betrayed this country to work on behalf of a state sponsor of terror,” U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride said in a statement. “While the autocratic Syrian regime killed, kidnapped, intimidated, and silenced thousands of its own citizens, Mr. Soueid spearheaded efforts to identify and intimidate those protesting against the Syrian government in the United States.”
Soueid’s lawyer had earlier argued that the government made mistakes in its translations.
