CNN reports that U.S. Major General Peter Fuller has been fired, effective immediately, for insulting the Afghan government.
Fuller, who was helping to train Afghan security forces, disparaged Afghan President Hamid Karzai for saying that Afghanistan would hypothetically side with Pakistan in a war with the U.S.
Said Fuller: “Why don’t you just poke me in the eye with a needle? You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m sorry, we just gave you $11.6 billion, and now you’re telling me, ‘I don’t really care’?”
American officials say Fuller misunderstood Karzai’s comments.
