Although Republican and Democratic budget negotiators touted their “common ground” on Thursday, a leading Senate Democrat reminded everyone that deep disagreements over taxes have caused talks to unravel in the past.

“The old bugaboo that has made other conferences fail is revenues,” Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said, as quoted by the New York Times.

Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-WA) and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) did their best to offer a message of unity on Thursday after a protracted struggle over government funding and the debt ceiling had finally been resolved.

Ryan said the goal is “to get our debt under control, to do smart deficit reduction, and to do things we think can grow the economy and get people back to work”

“We believe there is common ground,” Murray said.
