Defense officials have increased the death toll to 17 in a shooting allegedly carried out by a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan, the Associated Press reports. It was widely reported that Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales allegedly killed 16 Afghan civilians, including nine children. Defense officials didn’t explain the reason for the change.
