Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton invoked the late South African leader Nelson Mandela on Wednesday to criticize the Ukrainian government for violently cracking down on protesters.

“Just landed in NY. The Ukrainian government must follow Madiba’s example & choose dialogue with its people, not force,” Clinton wrote in a message posted on Twitter.

Riot police clashed with protesters early Wednesday morning. Secretary of State John Kerry responded to the violence with a statement expressing “disgust” that the protesters were met “with riot police, bulldozers, and batons, rather than with respect for democratic rights and human dignity.”
