Supporters of Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R ) have established a legal defense fund to help pay his mounting legal bills, The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Friday.
McDonnell is facing investigations — both state and federal, according to the Times-Dispatch — into his relationship with a Jonnie Williams, a Virginia businessman and political donor.
From the Times-Dispatch:
The “Restoration Fund,” chaired by Virginia Beach attorney Stanley Baldwin, is a nonprofit corporation that will operate as a political organization, according to a news release.
Other board members are Tom Knox, described as a Hampton Roads businessman and Jason Miyares, also an attorney in Virginia Beach.
“We believe that Bob McDonnell has complied with the laws of Virginia as they relate to financial disclosures. For a decades-long public servant like Governor McDonnell, the legal fees being incurred by the investigations spurred by the case against the former mansion chef could be ruinous,” Baldwin said in a statement.
