Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) said on Wednesday that he thinks the U.S. should drop negotiations with Iran and bomb the country’s nuclear facilities.

“We need to encourage this administration to go take out Iran’s nuclear capability,” he said on the Family Research Council’s “Washington Watch” radio show, according to a Right Wing Watch recording. “I don’t think we ought to put Israel in position of having to save both themselves and the United States. I think it’s time to bomb Iran — anything that resembles a nuclear facility.”

Gohmert added that President Obama’s attempt to negotiate a nuclear agreement with Iran will hurt the Democratic party.

“I’m hoping and praying the president will realize, despite the agenda he has that’s put Christians in jeopardy around the world, that he will not want to leave the Democratic Party so devastated that they won’t recover for many decades, that maybe he’ll start being more helpful to Israel instead of slapping them around as an unwelcome visitor and start treating them like a friend,” Gohmert said.

Later in the interview, the congressman pushed the debunked rumor that the Obama administration threatened to shoot down Israeli planes if the country attempts to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities.
