Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Thursday that it was a “great honor” to be complimented by Russian president Vladimir Putin — a man Trump described as “highly respected,” according to The Hill.

Putin had told reporters after his annual news conference that Trump was “talented.”

“He is a bright personality, a talented person, no doubt about it,” Putin said, according to NBC. “It is not up to us to appraise his positive sides, it is up to the U.S. voters. But, as we can see, he is an absolute leader in the presidential race.”

Trump addressed Putin’s comments at a campaign rally in Columbus, Ohio, according to the report.

“It is always a great honor to be so nicely complimented by a man so highly respected within his own country and beyond,” Trump said, as quoted by The Hill. “I have always felt that Russia and the United States should be able to work well with each other towards defeating terrorism and restoring world peace, not to mention trade and all of the other benefits derived from mutual respect.”
