What happened to Newt Gingrich? Back in early December — with Gingrich surging in the polls — he made a bold statement: “It’s very hard not to look at the recent polls and think that the odds are very high I’m going to be the nominee.”

“It’s getting easier,” Jon Stewart said Thursday. And then Gingrich came in fourth in both Iowa and New Hampshire. “Say hello to the president of “Fourthlandia!” Stewart said.

And one line that isn’t likely to help the former House Speaker is this: African Americans should demand paychecks over food stamps. And then offering to go to the NAACP and speak about it. How could that not possibly go over well with black voters? The great thing about Newt, Stewart said, is “he is not being defensive. He is truly bewildered that he’s taking shit for saying something so incredibly altruistic.”

“I’m willing to head down to the slums of Baltimore, taking my life into my own hands, and teaching you people what a paycheck looks like,” Stewart mocked.
