Details of Stephen Colbert’s “South Carolina Serious, Classy Republican Debate” are becoming more clear. Kind of…

“It’s happening, we’re doing it, we’ve set the date in stone, sometime in January,” Colbert said. “It’s going to be on Animal Planet. They haven’t returned my call yet.” But Colbert doesn’t care. He has a million networks interested in his debate: Oxygen, BET and Cinemax, to name a few.

Colbert also feels for Donald Trump, whose Newsmax Republican debate at the end of the month is quickly imploding without a full candidate lineup. “He called me last night,” Colbert said. “He cried, we talked, he was a gentleman about it. I’ve got all the respect in the world for the guy. That said, he’s a punch line.”

Colbert’s debate will feature all the candidates, including John McCain. Each candidate’s podium will have its own chandelier and the audience will have a dimmer switch. “This is the most real actual debate ever,” Colbert said. “I am on the South Carolina Republican primary like white on the Republican primary.”
