Herman Cain’s been flailing in trying to explain whether his comments about undergoing a campaign “reassessment” mean he’s thinking of dropping out. His Wednesday afternoon interview with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto will do little to clarify things, but it did provide some remarkable moments. Some of the highlights:

Cain’s Got A Great Explanation For Everything

Cain said that this was all happening because he is “the Democrats’ worst nightmare.” He claimed it was no coincidence that the stories started to come out as “my star was shining and rising.” Cain stressed he didn’t have complete clarity on the murky forces that might lie behind the conspiracy facing him, but he did come up with the following:

“Maybe the Democrats want Gingrich to win the nomination so they can then go after his personal life but they need to knock me out now. That’s just a hypothesis.”

Cain’s Wife Told Him She Loved Him Today

Cain admitted several times during the interview that the litany of allegations had taken an “emotional toll” on his wife and family. This, he said, was a key piece in his reassessment of the campaign. Cavuto questioned Cain over whether his wife had asked him if the latest allegations were true. Cain’s response:

“Yes, she did and I told her exactly what has happened and what the situation is. But my wife loves me. She told me that again today.”

Cain Rebuffs Allegations With His Own Character Assassination Of Ginger White

This Ginger White was having financial problems. And I was trying to help her. And, boom, she decides she will go public with this information…This was totally out of the blue.

Cain Admits Fundraising Down From $1 Million A Week To $100,000 A Week

That is accurate. But here is something that statement does not reflect. There are a lot of big money people who do not see me as a risk. I have not had people willing to hold fundraisers call and say I’m not with you.

Cain’s Not Just In Ohio Because He’s Flogging Books

Pressed by Cavuto on why he was in Ohio today rather than Iowa, Cain replied that he was running an “unusual campaign”:

“And what is unconventional is I run an early primary state campaign. And I’m making my presence known in some the other states that will be critical to the outcome of the primary election as well as the presidential election.”

Cain Wants To Remind Everyone He Had Cancer During The Alleged Affair

Cain’s referenced his impressive battle against cancer several times before. He brought it up again in order to bump up the idea that his relationship with Ginger White could only have been platonic.

You know, part of that story doesn’t make any sense, if I had been in some sort of physical affair for 13 years, in 2006 I had cancer for a year, so, I wasn’t having an affair with anybody even if it were true and it is not.

Cain Will Make His Mind Up By Next Week

Cavuto closed the interview with the following exchange:

Neil: Finally, a week from now, do you think in your gut you will still be a candidate?

Cain: A week from now I will have made a final decision.

Neil: In or out?

Cain: A week from now I will have made a decision.

Neil: At least you didn’t say 9-9-9. All right, always a pleasure. Thank you very much.
