Take 9

Romney says he would have saved Detroit after all.

Romney has famously been on every side of this issue. But the gist from the start has been that he claimed a desire to save the jobs and companies while being unwilling to provide the level of government support that was a prerequisite for doing so — because that was considered verboten by the Tea Party and anti-bailout forces in 2008.

He wanted to save the person over board in the water too. Just without using a life preserver. However that might be done. Feel free to use your imagination.

The simple reality is that in the crisis conditions of 2008 there was no way to keep the US auto industry from vanishing without resorting to means the embryonic Tea Party would attack him for using. So ever since he’s made himself into a particle out of quantum physics, appearing on one side or the other of the divide, depending on when and where you press him.
