We don’t know if it came into play specifically in the Abdulmutallab case. But many wondered why the debrief from the father didn’t generate more concern within the intel community. One issue we came across in our reporting is the fairly serious problem of so-called ‘poison pen’ reports — in most cases family members make false terrorism reports either to settle scores, prevent relatives from traveling or something else.
