MINNEAPOLIS — If Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Resigned) thought his progressive allies would stand by him through his resignation, he must not have talked to Markos Moulitsas recently.

Asked about Weiner’s resignation after a panel at the Netroots Nation conference here, Moulitsas was blunt. Weiner didn’t need to resign, he said, but the Democratic firebrand doesn’t need to be defended either.

“The guy’s an idiot,” Moulitsas said. “No sympathy.”

Other progressives have said that Weiner’s resignation could mark a new sign of weakness among Democrats that Republicans can exploit to their own ends.

Moulitsas dismissed that talk.

“No one gives a sh-t,” he said. “Who cares? It’s a sensationalistic story.”

He said Republicans will have a hard time making hay out of Weiner’s stepping down. He said he “wouldn’t have cared” if Weiner stayed, and added that Republicans have no cause to say anything about it.

“If the Republicans are gonna talk that trash about getting David Vitter to resign, then maybe we can talk about me calling for Anthony Weiner to resign,” he said.
