After the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) took a beating before the Supreme Court Wednesday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi sounded a note of optimism that gay rights advocates would emerge victorious in the case.

Pelosi, who attended Wednesday’s oral arguments, said that she’s confident the 1996 law will be ruled unconstitutional.

“On the basis of what I heard the questions that the justices, the response of the participants, I’m very optimistic that DOMA will be struck down,” Pelosi told reporters. “It doesn’t seem to have a rational basis, which is one of the criteria, rational basis, justification for being.”
