At the end of 2011, there were 6 billion mobile subscriptions worldwide, up from 5.4 billion in 2010, with most of the growth coming from the developing world, according to a new report from the International Telecommunications Union, the telecom agency of the United Nations. As the report, titled “Measuring the Information Society 2012,” states:
The number of mobile-cellular subscriptions increased by more than 600 million, almost all of them in the developing world, to a total of around 6 billion, or 86 per 100 inhabitants, globally. China alone is home to 1 billion subscriptions, and India is expected to hit the 1 billion mark in 2012.
