More than 100 demonstrators clashed with police in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum for the third straight day, protesting the country’s increasing austerity measures and depreciating currency. The protesters are comprised mainly of students, and police were forced to use batons and tear gas to break up the crowd.
Sudan’s budget deficit is currently pegged at $2.4 billion, forcing President Omar Hassan al-Bashir to implement unpopular austerity measures, including cessation of fuel subsidies.
