Conservative political commentator Pat Buchanan said during an interview on Wednesday that Sen.-elect Joni Ernst was “an enormously attractive figure.”

The comments came during Newsmax’s “America’s Forum.” After host J.D. Hayworth noted that Buchanan previously said Ernst was a “hot ticket with pizzazz,” the commentator reiterated his praise of the Iowa Republican.

“She’s a gal with a real sense of humor, with a fighting spirit who was an underdog and came in to win,” he said. “I think all the eyes will be on her in Washington D.C. and I think she’s got a real opportunity to be something of a national star.”

Buchanan also responded to a question about how Ernst would establish herself within the “firmament of GOP female stars.”

“She has the same kind of attractiveness that Sarah Palin had at the start and that Michele Bachmann gained in the Iowa caucuses, I mean being a very attractive, outspoken person, a woman in the GOP, full of passion and full of, you know, hard-core philosophy,” Buchanan said. And so I think she’s got a real potential to be that kind of leader.”

Buchanan’s comments come days after former Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) said Ernst was “really attractive” and “as good looking as Taylor Swift,” statements to which Ernst took great offense and for which Harkin eventually apologized.
