Officials confirmed on Tuesday that they had identified the officer who was allegedly caught on camera screaming at an immigrant Uber cab driver and trying to humiliate him by mocking his accent, news site DNAinfo reported.
Officials and anonymous sources told the news site that the officer was a detective with the New York Police Department and was being investigated by the Civilian Complaint Review Board. A spokesperson for the NYPD also confirmed that the detective had been identified, DNAinfo reported.
According to the news site, sources identified the man as Patrick Cherry, a detective with the Joint Terrorism Task Force. DNAinfo reported that the task force’s headquarters is located near the West Side Highway where the YouTube video was reportedly filmed.
In the video, the man believed to be Cherry shouted at the driver, asking him how long he’d been in this country. At one point he screamed at the driver and mimicked the way he spoke English.
“Stop it with your mouth!” he said. “Stop it with your ‘For what, sir? For what, sir?'”
DNAinfo attempted to contact Cherry but received no response via email or phone.
