Carey Gabay — the 43-year-old aide to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) who was shot at a festival in Brooklyn on Labor Day — died Wednesday night, the New York Times reported.

Gabay was shot during a predawn celebration at the annual West Indian American Day Parade in Crown Heights. He was declared brain dead on Tuesday night.

Cuomo said in a statement to the Times:

It is with profound sadness that we learn of the passing of Carey Gabay. Carey was the epitome of an outstanding public servant. He held a tremendous commitment to his community, and he chose to use his many talents to better the lives of others. New York is undeniably a better place today because of his service.
