Trump Requested A Mail-In Ballot, Despite Ongoing Efforts To Discredit Mail-In Voting

President Donald Trump has requested a mail-in ballot ahead of Florida’s primary election next week, in spite of repeatedly railing against and trying to discredit the practice in recent months as part of a campaign tactic.

USA Today was the first to report that President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will cast ballots by mail as Palm Beach County voters.

According to the Palm Beach County elections website, the President made the request for the ballot on Wednesday.

The news comes after a months-long effort by the President to discredit the practice of voting by mail. The practice has been used effectively to the exclusion of in-person voting in some states, and has been expanded in others in recent months to encourage safe voting amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Although many elections experts have said there is no real difference between absentee voting and no-excuse mail voting, White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere told CNN that “the President supports absentee voting, not universal mail-in voting, which contain several safeguards that prevent fraud and abuse.”

While for months, Trump pushed a wholesale attack on mail-in voting, falsely claiming that it promoted fraud, he recently reversed those claims, suggesting  in a tweet earlier this month that it was a “Safe and Secure” practice that had been “cleaned up” in GOP-led states like Florida.

The President even appeared to admit in the tweet, that the terms “absentee” and “vote-by-mail” — which he had differentiated to justify his own absentee voting in the past — were interchangeable. 

“Whether you call it Vote by Mail or Absentee Voting,” Trump wrote at the time, “in Florida the election system is Safe and Secure, Tried and True.” 

Earlier this week, the President repeatedly suggested in news conferences and interviews that he has intentionally blocked the much-needed additional funding proposal from Congressional Democrats for the US Postal Service to aid in election mail delivery in an effort that could amount to voter suppression.

Trump Ignites Yet Another Racist Conspiracy Theory, Aimed This Time At Kamala Harris

President Donald Trump on Thursday fanned the flame surrounding a false racist conspiracy theory that Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), the Democratic vice presidential nominee who was born in California, was not eligible to serve as vice president because her parents were immigrants.

Trump told reporters during a White House news conference Thursday that he had “heard” rumors that Harris, a Black and Asian American woman, who is a U.S.-born citizen does not meet the requirements for the vice presidency, adding that the claims were “very serious.”

“I heard it today that she doesn’t meet the requirements,” Trump said when asked about Harris’ eligibility, likely referring to a widely discredited claim made in a Newsweek op-ed by conservative lawyer John Eastman that the U.S. Constitution doesn’t grant birthright citizenship.

“I have no idea if that’s right,” Trump added. “I would have thought, I would have assumed, that the Democrats would have checked that out before she gets chosen to run for vice president.”

The claim made by Eastman, and advanced by Trump, that Harris is ineligible to serve is not true. 

Harris’s parents, were working academics hailing from Jamaica and India, who met as grad students while at UC Berkeley before Harris was born in Oakland in 1964. But even the status of the Democratic vice presidential nominee’s parents at the time of her birth are irrelevant to her eligibility to be vice president since the Constitution guarantees citizenship to anyone born in the United States.

Constitutional law scholars, debunking the claim, have pointed out the unwavering clarity of the 14th Amendment which states: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

Trump used similar tactics to try to deny the legitimacy of Barack Obama’s presidency —  using a race-based and anti-immigrant attack to suggest for years that the former President was born in Kenya not Hawaii.

This time, the President’s own reelection campaign’s legal adviser, Jenna Ellis, shared the controversial Eastman column in a tweet. Trump defended the column hours later saying the op-ed had been written by a “very highly qualified and very talented lawyer.”

Newsweek has denied claims that the op-ed is tied to birtherism. Global editor-in-chief Nancy Cooper and opinion editor Josh Hammer said in an editor’s note that Eastman’s essay has “no connection whatsoever” to the false claims made about Obama, adding that the issues raised by Eastman were not meant to deny facts or make false claims.

“No one is questioning Harris’ place of birth or the legitimacy of an obviously valid birth certificate,” the editors wrote.

Trump Floats Birther Conspiracy On Harris Amid Campaign-Style Briefing

President Trump — whose rise in Republican politics began when he falsely suggested in 2011 that then-President Barack Obama wasn’t born in the U.S. — is now floating a birther conspiracy against Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) as part of his efforts to discredit Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s VP pick.

During a press conference at the White House on Thursday evening, Trump piled onto his ongoing attacks against Harris by bolstering a conspiracy that she’s ineligible for the vice presidency, after being pressed on baseless allegations on social media that she is an “anchor baby.”

“I heard it today that she doesn’t meet the requirements,” Trump said. “And, by the way, the lawyer that wrote that piece is a very highly qualified, very talented lawyer.”

The President appeared to take a cue from Trump campaign legal adviser Jenna Ellis, who reposted a tweet by Tom Fitton, the president of the conservative group Judicial Watch, asking whether Harris is “ineligible to be Vice President under the U.S. Constitution’s ‘Citizenship Clause'” earlier Thursday. Fitton’s tweet included a link to an op-ed by John Eastman, a law professor at Chapman University, published in Newsweek on Wednesday.

“I have no idea if that’s right, I would’ve assumed the Democrats would’ve checked that out before she gets chosen to run for vice president,” Trump said. “But that’s very serious, they are saying she doesn’t qualify because she wasn’t born in this country.”

After a reporter pointed out that Harris — who will be the first Black and South Asian woman to appear on a major presidential ticket — was born in California, Trump simply replied that he’ll “take a look.”

“I don’t know about it, I just heard about it, I’ll take a look,” Trump said.

Biden Camp: Trump Sabotaging USPS Is Desperate Man’s ‘Assault On Democracy’

President Donald Trump suggested on Thursday that he was intentionally blocking additional funding for the US Postal Service in an effort to disrupt attempts to expand mail-in voting amid the coronavirus pandemic — an effort that the Biden campaign has called a desperate man’s “assault on democracy.”

Biden campaign rapid response director Andrew Bates told TPM in a statement that Trump’s effort to deny a Democratic proposal for additional funding for the USPS  amounted to a selfish move to deprive Americans of their fundamental right to vote safely.

“Even Donald Trump’s own campaign has endorsed voting by mail, and his own administration has conclusively refuted his wild-eyed conspiracy theories about the most secure form of voting,” Bates said in the statement. “This is an assault on our democracy and economy by a desperate man who’s terrified that the American people will force him to confront what he’s done everything in his power to escape for months — responsibility for his own actions.”

Trump suggested as much during a White House press conference Wednesday, implying that perhaps without the additional funding, his woes about vote-by-mail, which he is convinced will hurt him in November, will just disappear.

“They don’t have the money to do the universal mail-in voting,” Trump said on Wednesday. “Therefore, they can’t do it, I guess. Right?”

The President, whose comments imply a commitment to leveraging his office to boost his campaign prospects, appears to be bent on crippling efforts by congressional Democrats to make voting safer amid the pandemic, which he is convinced will hurt his chances for re-election.

The previous coronavirus relief bill, known as the CARES Act, provided USPS a $10 billion loan. Trump has said he is unwilling to budge on congressional Democrats’ request for $25 billion in USPS funding this round — which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) confirmed during an MSNBC interview Thursday morning was simply the figure requested by the Trump-appointed USPS Board of Governors.

“When the President goes after the Postal Service, he’s going after an all-American, highly approved-by-the-public institution,” Pelosi told “Morning Joe” hosts, adding that the dollar-amount for the USPS camedirectly from a recommendation by a bipartisan Board of Governors “100 percent appointed by Donald Trump.”

Trump has for months railed against mail-in voting broadly, changing course recently to direct those attacks at Democratic-governed states, suggesting that voting-by-mail in GOP-led states like Florida is safe and secure.
