Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee on Monday taunted former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton minutes after the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.
“Amy Coney Barrett, confirmed. Happy Birthday, @HillaryClinton!” the House Judiciary GOP wrote in a tweet directed at Clinton who condemned the move to confirm the conservative judge to the Supreme Court while celebrating her 73rd birthday on Monday.
McConnell’s refusal to hold a hearing on President Obama’s Supreme Court pick after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, along with Clinton’s electoral defeat by President Donald Trump four years ago, arguably enabled the conservative ideological tilt of the high court — with three conservative appointments to the Supreme Court since President Trump was elected.
Barrett takes her seat as a Supreme Court justice in unprecedented circumstances — becoming the first in 151 years to be confirmed without the support of a single member of the minority party in an move that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called “an act of supreme desperation.”
While the confirmation process for Barrett is over, journalists and political commentators made clear they have no intention of forgetting the hurried process that took place as voters were already casting their ballots — potentially ushering in a new administration that would have nominated a very different candidate for the court:

Trump Wonders Why Press Talks About ‘COVID, COVID, COVID’ Amid Surge Of New Cases
President Donald Trump early Tuesday doubled down on a false claim that the United States is “rounding the turn” in its efforts to curb the coronavirus pandemic, complaining of the overwhelming coverage of the pandemic by the press.

Trump’s remarks on Twitter follow a longstanding stream of efforts by the President to undermine the seriousness of the COVID-19 crisis while repeatedly complaining about widespread coverage by the press of a pandemic which has killed more than 226,000 people in the United States.
“Other than the fake news wants to scare everybody, we are absolutely rounding the corner,” Trump told reporters Monday en route to rallies in Pennsylvania.
The comments followed a tweet from hours earlier blaming the news media for “riding COVID, COVID, COVID, all the way to the Election. Losers!”
President Trump continued to shrug off the seriousness of the virus when he told supporters at rallies later in the day that his own recovery from COVID-19 was evidence of how the virus is less threatening than it has been portrayed — even though close to 1,000 people died in the United States from the virus on multiple days last week — reaching a high of roughly 1,200 deaths on Wednesday.
“I mean, I got it and I’m here. We have great medicines and therapeutics. The first lady got it…you know who else got it? Barron.”
What’s more — some former Trump associates and ex-administration officials appear to back the President’s repeated attempts to undermine the seriousness of the virus with just a week until the election.
“If you think Covid is a big deal, then you are not voting for the president,” a former senior administration official told Politico in a recent interview. “We’ve gotten through the president of the United States having Covid,” the official said adding that a positive COVID-19 test for Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff over the weekend was not going to be “a game changer.”
Other administration officials, however, have privately questioned whether recent outbreaks in the West Wing demonstrate an inability by the President to make decisions that can protect the American people.
“It calls into question whether the administration can be trusted to keep Americans safe if we can’t even keep our own staff safe,” one senior administration official told Politico of the recent clusters of the virus among White House staff, adding, “we supposedly work in one of the most secure places in the world.”

Biden Decries ‘Rushed And Unprecedented’ Barrett Confirmation
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden late Monday tore into Senate Republicans for the “rushed and unprecedented” confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court amid the election, pointing at its potentially damaging blow to health care provisions for millions of Americans as the high court prepares for a hearing on the Affordable Care Act.
“The rushed and unprecedented confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett as Associate Justice to the Supreme Court, in the middle of an ongoing election, should be a stark reminder to every American that your vote matters,” Biden said in a statement.
As Senate Republicans have pushed to quickly confirm Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Democrats and health care advocates have pointed at the newly-confirmed justice’s likelihood of voting to strike down what has become a key election issue amid the coronavirus pandemic — the Affordable Care Act, which protects the health care of at least 20 million people in the United States.
“Just a few days after Election Day next week, the Supreme Court will hear the case on the Affordable Care Act,” Biden said, adding that President Donald Trump has “been crystal clear” on his desire to wipe out the Obama-era health care policy.
During a CBS interview on “60 Minutes” that the President leaked last week, when asked about the policy of his predecessor, Trump said “I hope that they end it.”
“It will be so good if they end it because we will come up with a plan,” Trump told correspondent Lesley Stahl in the interview of his yet-to-be-achieved campaign goal of four years ago do away with the health care policy.
“This goal — the goal of the Republican Party for ten years — was a litmus test in selecting this nominee, regardless of the damage done to the U.S. Senate, to Americans’ faith in the legitimacy of the Supreme Court, and to our democracy, and regardless of how the Affordable Care Act has protected hundreds of millions of people before and during the pandemic,” Biden said.
“Vote for a president, for Members of Congress, and candidates up and down the ticket who actually have a plan for health care, and who will build on the Affordable Care Act to expand coverage, bring down costs, and give you more choices,” the Democratic nominee said.
Closing with a more emotional tone, Biden urged voters to consider casting their ballot to honor “the legacy of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” whose death in September set off the hurried effort to replace her with the more ideologically conservative Barrett.
“She was proof that courage, conviction, and moral clarity can change not just the law, but also the world. Let us continue to be voices for justice in her name,” Biden said.
