House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) praised Stacey Abrams’ SOTU rebuttal as “good for the party,” adding with a chuckle that he thinks she was also “auditioning for the Senate race” in Georgia in 2020.
“I think she had two messages,” Clyburn said of Abrams’ speech. “I think it was very good for the party to have her there. Everybody knows she ran a great race. A lot of people suspect that things were stacked against us — her.”
“I think we were doing what we thought was necessary to hold her out as a part of the future of this party,” he continued. “She, I think, was auditioning for the Senate race.”
Many Democrats have urged Abrams to go up against Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) in 2020 after her impressive gubernatorial run — which she says was tainted by voter suppression and other illegal activity — made her a star in the party.
