The California Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that Sergio Garcia, an undocumented immigrant, should be allowed to practice law, Reuters reported.

Garcia passed the California bar exam and challenged a 1996 law that keeps undocumented residents from obtaining professional licenses.

Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed legislation in October that allows the state to issue law licenses to undocumented residents, and state bar officials and the California attorney general have supported Garcia in his lawsuit.
