Trump Cites Photo Of Schumer, Putin Eating Donuts In Calling For Probe

President Donald Trump on Friday tweeted an old photo of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N) with Russian President Vladimir Putin, writing there should be an investigation into Schumer “and his ties to Russia and Putin.”

“We should start an immediate investigation into @SenSchumer and his ties to Russia and Putin,” the tweet reads. “A total hypocrite!”

The photo captures a scene from a 2003 meeting between Schumer and Putin to mark the occasion of New York’s first Lukoil gas station opening. The two are shown eating Krispy Kreme donuts, according to the AP photo caption.

The photo has been circulated on conservative news sites over the last few days, after Schumer called for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign following revelations that Sessions met twice with Russia’s ambassador to the United States before the election.

The photo of Schumer and Putin was leading the conservative aggregator Drudge Report at the time of Trump’s tweet.

Schumer responded in a quote tweet, saying that he’s happy to talk about his conversation with Putin.

Dear Reader,

When we asked recently what makes TPM different from other outlets, readers cited factors like honesty, curiosity, transparency, and our vibrant community. They also pointed to our ability to report on important stories and trends long before they are picked up by mainstream outlets; our ability to contextualize information within the arc of history; and our focus on the real-world consequences of the news.

Our unique approach to reporting and presenting the news, however, wouldn’t be possible without our readers’ support. That’s not just marketing speak, it’s true: our work would literally not be possible without readers deciding to become members. Not only does member support account for more than 80% of TPM’s revenue, our members have helped us build an engaged and informed community. Many of our best stories were born from reader tips and valuable member feedback.

We do what other news outlets can’t or won’t do because our members’ support gives us real independence.

If you enjoy reading TPM and value what we do, become a member today.
