Trump Claims Polls Showing Him Losing Are ‘Phony’ And Suppressing The Vote

Donald Trump slammed “phony polls put out by phony media” at a farmers’ roundtable in Boynton Beach, Florida on Monday.

Trump claimed that polls showing him losing are “heavily weighted with Democrats” to give inaccurate results, according to a transcript by CBS News reporter Sopan Deb.

He cited an ABC News poll released Sunday which showed Hillary Clinton with a 12-point lead over him as an example of a “heavily weighted” and “totally phony” poll.

“It’s part of the rigged system that I’ve been talking about since I entered the race,” Trump claimed, citing his performance in the Republican primary race as evidence that recent polls were underestimating his support.

He described the slew of polls showing Clinton in the lead as “dark polls” put out by the “phony” media in order to discourage voters.

“They try and suppress the vote. This way, people don’t go out and vote,” he said. “But we’re winning this race. I really believe we’re winning.”

Even Trump’s campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, acknowledged that the GOP nominee was “behind” in the polls in a Sunday morning appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Dear Reader,

When we asked recently what makes TPM different from other outlets, readers cited factors like honesty, curiosity, transparency, and our vibrant community. They also pointed to our ability to report on important stories and trends long before they are picked up by mainstream outlets; our ability to contextualize information within the arc of history; and our focus on the real-world consequences of the news.

Our unique approach to reporting and presenting the news, however, wouldn’t be possible without our readers’ support. That’s not just marketing speak, it’s true: our work would literally not be possible without readers deciding to become members. Not only does member support account for more than 80% of TPM’s revenue, our members have helped us build an engaged and informed community. Many of our best stories were born from reader tips and valuable member feedback.

We do what other news outlets can’t or won’t do because our members’ support gives us real independence.
