Donald Trump confirmed during Thursday’s Republican presidential debate that Ben Carson was endorsing him and further suggested that Carson would be “very involved” in his education policy.

While discussing his opposition to Common Core, Trump said he’d picked up some interesting ideas about education policy during an hour-long Thursday conversation with his former 2016 rival.

“He has such a great handle on it,” the GOP frontrunner said of Carson. “He wants competitive schools and a lot of different things that are terrific, including charter schools that the unions are fighting like crazy. But charter schools work and work very well. There are a lot of things. I’m going to have Ben very involved with education, something that’s an expertise of his.”

Trump said he wanted education standards to be set by individual states instead of the federal government. When CNN moderator Jake Tapper clarified that the standards and curricula are developed by the states, Trump held fast to his claim that the system had been “taken over by the federal government.”

Carson dropped out of the campaign last week and is expected to endorse Trump on Friday morning.
