Following Thursday night’s Republican presidential debate, Donald Trump suggested that he always gets audited by the IRS because of his religion.
During a post-debate interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo, Trump noted that he cannot release his tax returns while he’s being audited. He then lamented that he’s constantly audited by the IRS.
“I’m always audited by the IRS, which I think is very unfair. I don’t know — maybe because of religion, maybe because of something else, maybe because I’m doing this, although this is just recently,” he said.
Cuomo then asked Trump what he meant by “religion.”
“Well, maybe because of the fact that I’m a strong Christian, and I feel strongly about it. And maybe there’s a bias,” Trump responded.
“You think you get audited for being a strong Christian?” Cuomo asked in response.
“You see what’s happened, you have many religious groups that are complaining about that,” Trump replied. “They’ve been complaining about it for a long time.”
Earlier in the interview, Trump noted that Mitt Romney — who on Wednesday called on Trump to release his tax returns — did not release his tax returns until later in the election cycle.
“Mitt is just trying to remain relevant. Nobody’s talking to him much anymore,” Trump said.
