The top press operative in Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) Senate office is leaving to go back into conservative commentary.

Amanda Carpenter, currently the communications director for Cruz’s Senate office, will leave the operation on July 5, according to Roll Call. She previously served as a speech writer and senior communications adviser out of Cruz’s Senate office, according to Roll Call. She also worked for then-Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC).

“As some of you know, back in 2010 when I first came to Capitol Hill to be Sen. DeMint’s speechwriter, my plan was to only stay a couple years and then return to media. Because I was offered the extraordinary opportunity to work for Sen. Cruz that extended into five years, now going on six years,” Carpenter said in a note obtained by Roll Call. “I’’ve been doing a lot of thinking and now that the campaign is fully operational in Houston with a first-rate team, it’s a natural time for me to step away and return to writing under my own byline.”

Carpenter was previously a writer for The Washington Times, Human Events, and Townhall.com.

She had been a core member of Cruz’s early presidential “brain trust.” She has been known for her aggressive presence on Twitter, where she has a following of over 50,000.

Correction: This story previously said Carpenter was communications director for Cruz’s presidential campaign. We regret the error.
