Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) won’t run for a sixth term next year, he told the Associated Press on Saturday. “It’s just time to step aside,” he said.
Harkin, 73, cited his age as a factor in the decision and said it would allow a younger generation of Democrats to seek office.
The AP noted the decision came as a surprise, with the senator having scheduled a fundraiser next month in Washington, D.C.
