A group of evangelicals is urging Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) to do something on climate change.

The evangelicals, in a new ad, paid for by the Evangelical Environmental Network, angles acting on climate change on something directly related to what’s in the bible.

“I would like to see the environment protected. That’s what God created,” one voice in the ad said.

“I think Governor Scott ought to protect our environment because the Bible indicates as Christians we ought to take care of the Earth,” another voice said.

“I’m pro-life, and I’m pro-family and I do believe that we should do all that we can to protect our environment,” a third voice said. “It was given to us by God.”

A voiceover near the end of the ad concludes: “Climate change is real, it endangers the health of our children, worsens poverty throughout the world, and threatens our economy. Call Gov. Rick Scott and tell him as pro-life Christians we believe care for God’s creation is one of the greatest moral challenges of our time.”

Climate change has been something that Scott’s Democratic opponent in his fight for re-election, former Gov. Charlie Crist, has been able to use as a cudgel against the current governor. Earlier in the year Scott avoided questions on climate change by saying “I’m not a scientist.” In response, Crist said “I’m not a scientist either but I can use my brain and and I can talk to one.” Billionaire Tom Steyer’s NextGen Climate Action group has also recently launched a campaign targeting Scott on climate change.

And as The Huffington Post also noted, a number of scientists have previously met with Scott to warn him about the dangers of ignoring climate change.

The TPM Polltracker average gives Crist a 2.3 point over Scott.

  1. There is a noticeable (akin to Sam Harris’ 20% of Muslims) number of evangelist Christians who are seriously sane on climate change.

  2. I’m not usually one to go after people’s appearance, but seeing that pic of Gov. Scott, I can’t help myself. Is he trying to look like Lord Voldemort?

  3. Fucking frightening. I think that’s the face he makes every day when he visits the pound at noon to pick out his lunch kitten.

Good to see the silent Christians are speaking out though. What? Conservatives can complain about Muslims staying silent int he face of their fellow Muslims’ bad behavior, but we can’t complain about it from Christians? I think not.

  4. Maybe some of those evangelicals will vote for Crist. I wouldn’t hold my breath, but one can hope. My husband and I already voted by absentee for Crist. Unfortunately, the butchered gerrymandering remains unaffected for this election. Nonetheless, if Scott wins another term then I have lost all faith in my fellow Floridians.

  5. Still having a hard time getting my head around the term “evangelicals”! To me this “born again” “evangelical” Jesus crap is the most depressing thing about 21st century America. New Testament, Old Testament, gospels, scriptures…What a bunch of bullshit! It’s nice that some of the members of the “evangelical/Born again for Jesus” fan club arn’t 100% insane but their number is few and far between.
