Rick Perry: ‘Everybody In Life’s Had Money Problems From Time To Time’

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) told Fox News on Wednesday morning that he isn’t worried that his presidential campaign is effectively broke because, as he put it, “Everybody in life’s had some money problems from time to time.”

Perry, speaking from Iowa during “Fox & Friends,” insisted his presidential bid was still viable despite the fact that the campaign stopped paying staffers last week.

“Everybody in life’s had some money problems from time to time,” Perry said. “Even as the governor of Texas in 2003, we had $10 billion shortfall. And whether in your campaign or whether it’s in personal life or your small business or being the governor of the 12th largest economy in the world, you got to make cuts and reduce and have a little smaller footprint. That’s what we’ve done. Nothing is changing from the standpoint of our message and going to the places.”

Having the most cash does not automatically win the presidency, Perry told “Fox & Friends.”

“If the person with the most money could win the presidency, if that’s all was required, I’m sure Donald Trump would write a check and be done,” he said.

Perry said on Tuesday that he expects to start paying staffers again.

The former governor, who is also battling a felony corruption charge related to his time in office, said Americans can relate to his money woes.

“I’m pretty sure that most Americans have had some ups and downs in their business before, have had some challenges before. Certainly I have in all of my campaigns, and this one’s no different,” Perry told BuzzFeed News. “I’ve got some great people working for me, some folks that are volunteering for us.”

  1. Most people have had money problems. It’s rarer that the problems spring from being a quixotic and generally lousy candidate for President. That’s not quite as “relatable.” Nice try though.

  2. “Even as the governor of Texas in 2003, we had $10 billion short fall.”

Yeah, but the Federal government isn’t going to bail out your personal campaign.

Have you started the paperwork on moving all those staffers over to the super PAC yet? Just ignore those rules limiting coordination between PACs and campaigns. Hell, all your competitors are screaming about ignoring actual Constitutional amendments. You can’t get all wishy washy about ignoring a few FEC regulations. Man up, big guy.

  3. How can we trust a nation’s budget to some buster who can’t manage the finances of his own campaign?

  4. 12th largest economy in the world?

How’s that for framing a talking point. Jeez.

Surely somebody with glasses like Perry can manage a campaign’s finances, no?

  5. Bet neither Romney or Trump have ever had money problems except what to do with so much of it.
