Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) has stopped paying staffers on his struggling presidential campaign, according to multiple national and local reports on Monday night.

The campaign stopped paying staffers at the headquarters in Austin as well as Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, the Texas Tribune reported Monday.

News that Perry would stop paying staffers in South Carolina, an early primary state, was first reported by the National Journal.

“Pay is only one reason people do this,” Perry’s South Carolina state director Katon Dawson told National Journal. “We’ll be able to live off the land for a while.”

In the meantime, Perry’s White House hopes will be propped up by super PACs, the Tribune reported.

In Iowa, Perry polled at 2 percent, according to a poll released Monday. Nationally, he hasn’t fared any better. Perry polled at 2 percent after a poor performance in last week’s debate for lower-tier GOP candidates, according to a poll released after the debates.
