Investigators looking into gifts given to Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R ) and his family are asking whether the state’s first lady, Maureen McDonnell, got free cosmetic dental work from a prominent dentist, The Washington Post reported late Thursday.
From the Post:
Federal officials have been investigating allegations that a dentist within the large Richmond-area practice of W. Baxter Perkinson Jr. provided cosmetic dentistry services at no charge to the first lady, according to the two people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
Investigators have been probing the relationship between the McDonnells and a Virginia businessman and political donor Jonnie Williams, the chief executive officer of Star Scientific.
Rich Galen, a private spokesperson for Gov. McDonnell, neither confirmed nor denied that the first lady had received free dental work.
“It wasn’t reported, but it didn’t have to be reported,” Galen said, speaking hypothetically, referencing Virginia law, which states that elected officials do not have to disclose gifts to immediate family members.
