Televangelist Pat Robertson argued Wednesday that, despite a long history of disparaging homsexuality, he’s not actually “anti-gay.”
Robertson claimed that his program, “The 700 Club,” has a large gay audience.
“I am very pleased that we have many, many, many homosexuals watching this program and many of them are looking for love and acceptance and help and I’m glad to report that we have thousands of these people who are saying, ‘yes we want to follow Jesus, we’re not happy with the lifestyle we’re in and we want to have a better way,’ I think it’s wonderful that that’s happening,” Robertson said.
Robertson then speculated that those who are “into this homosexual thing” may have been victims of sexual abuse as children or “maybe got some chromosomal damage.”
The Southern Baptist minister suggested earlier this week that Facbeook should incorporate a “Vomit” button to be used for pictures of same-sex couples. Following the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) last month, Robertson wondered out loud if Justice Anthony Kennedy, who wrote the majority opinion in the case, has “some clerks that happen to be gays.”
