President Obama responded at the debate to Mitt Romney’s accusation that his policies represented “trickle-down government,” by promoting his education plans.

“Let me talk about what I think we need to do. We have to improve our education system. We have made enormous progress drawing on ideas from Democrats and Republicans,” said Obama. “They are starting to show gains in some of the toughest to deal with schools. We have a program called Race to the Top that has prompted reforms in 46 states, raising standards, improving how we train teachers.

“I want to hire another 100,000 new math and science teachers and create 2 million more slots in our community colleges, so people can get trained for the jobs that are out there. I want to make sure we keep tuition low for our young people.”
