The Mississippi Senate race between Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MI) and Democratic challenger Mike Espy will advance to a runoff on November 27, with neither candidate reaching the 50 percent threshold, NBC News projected.

Chris McDaniel, a firebrand Republican state senator, came in third and got almost 17 percent of the vote. He will not participate in the runoff, leaving Hyde-Smith the clear favorite.
