Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) released his first ad in the special election to fill John Kerry’s Senate seat Tuesday, focusing on the issue of gun control.

The ad begins with footage of former National Rifle Association President Charlton Heston famously holding up a gun and saying, “from my cold, dead hands.” The ad applauds Markey for standing up to the NRA and standing by President Obama to pass gun safety measures in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting.

“I’m Ed Markey, in the Senate I’ll keep standing up to the gun lobby,” Markey says in the ad.

The ad is running statewide in Massachusetts ahead of the April 30 primary, in which Markey will face Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA).
