Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said Tuesday that he plans to skip what is almost certain to be a tumultuous Republican National Convention this summer in Cleveland.

The 2008 Republican presidential nominee told The Hill that he won’t be in attendance at the July GOP convention, saying he will focus on his re-election bid against Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-AZ) instead.

“I have to campaign for reelection, and I have always done that when I’m up,” he told The Hill. “We have a late primary in Arizona.”

McCain is facing a tough race, with a recent poll showing Kirkpatrick pulling even with him.

McCain is the second GOP senator to definitively say that he won’t attend the convention, after Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL), who faces his own difficult re-election contest.
