The AP reports that Iraqi leaders are asking US military trainers to stay beyond the 2012 deadline for American troop withdrawal, but are still refusing to grant any remaining troops immunity.
A meeting was held by Iraqi leadership on Tuesday to discuss the issue. “The leaders agreed on the need to train the Iraqi forces and to complete equipping the forces as soon as possible,” said Deputy Prime Minister Roz Nouri Shawez. “The heads of blocs agreed on the necessity of not granting the immunity.”
Immunity from prosecution is a key issue for the Pentagon, which is refusing to risk leaving American forces to face possible charges in an Iraqi court.
