Majorities of Americans are following the controversy involving the Internal Revenue Service and the congressional investigation into the deadly attack in Benghazi, Libya, according to research released Thursday from Gallup, but Republicans are far more invested in each story.
Fifty-four percent of all respondents said they are following the news that the IRS applied greater scrutiny to conservative groups either “very” or “somewhat” closely, while 53 percent said the same of the congressional hearings on Benghazi. According to Gallup, that level of public interest is “comparatively low based on historical measures of other news stories over the last two decades.”
Among Republicans, 67 percent said they are following the IRS situation and 66 percent said they are following the Benghazi investigation. On the other hand, fewer than half of Democrats are following each story.
