Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) voted Tuesday in the special election to succeed her in Congress.
Giffords was accompanied to the polls by her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, and Democratic nominee Ron Barber, who is also a former staffer. Barber faces Republican candidate Jesse Kelly, an Iraq War veteran who was previously Giffords’ opponent in 2010.
Giffords survived after being shot in the head at a district event near Tucson in January 2011. She resigned her seat a little over a year later in January 2012, in order to focus full time on her recovery. Barber was also wounded in the shooting, and six people were killed.
