Fox News announced Tuesday it had “mutually” halted its contributor agreement with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, adding fuel to the rumors that he is a top choice for Donald Trump’s running mate.

Fox directly linked the speculation surrounding Gingrich as a potential vice presidential pick to the suspension of his contributor agreement in a statement.

“Due to the intense media speculation about Gingrich’s potential selection as Donald Trump’s Vice Presidential candidate, we felt it best to halt his contributor role to avoid all conflicts of interest that may arise,” the statement from Executive Vice President Jay Wallace read.

It had been previously reported that Gingrich, who was said to receive the private backing of Trump surrogate Ben Carson, was the businessman’s top choice for a running mate.

Shortly after the announcement, Gingrich appeared on Fox News during the 4 p.m. hour to discuss the rumblings about him serving as a potential Trump running mate and Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s questioning by the House Judiciary Committee.
